Amazon is SHUTTING DOWN China eCommerce operations. Yet another example that proves what works globally does not work in China. This underscores how competitive and fast moving the market is, and the importance of having the right China strategy for brands.

Amazon’s failure to adapt to a transparent marketplace environment left it vulnerable to TaoBao.

Amazon acts as a retailer, whereas TaoBao integrates shopping with entertainment, community and merchant accountability.The purpose of TaoBao (initially) was a safe place for all Chinese to shop. There are now 80 million merchants on TaoBao.
