China Just Confirmed Its Strongest El Niño Ever. Down Jacket Brands Are Sweating... and Not From the Cold.
Picture your best-selling winter coat.
Now picture it on a rack in Shanghai in December, when it is 15°C outside.
That is the risk every outerwear brand in China is looking at, and this week it stopped being a guess.
The forecast, in numbers
On October 9, China's National Climate Center announced that a super El Niño formed in September 2026, and that it is on track to be the strongest since systematic monitoring began.
The numbers behind that. September's Niño3.4 index hit 2.94°C, up 0.35°C on August, with a July-to-September average of 2.54°C. It is an eastern-type event, with the warm water sitting in the equatorial eastern Pacific, and it is forecast to peak in late autumn or early winter.
For scale, China has recorded three super El Niños before: 1982-83, 1997-98 and 2014-16. The current sea surface temperature index and the rate it is warming are both clearly above where those sat at the same point.
Then the winter outlook from the China Meteorological Administration, covering December 2026 to February 2027:
Temperatures above normal overall
Cold wave frequency slightly above normal
Large swings between warm and cold
Precipitation above normal, with freezing rain risk in the south
A former CMA chief service expert, Zhu Dingzhen (朱定真), has said a warm winter is basically certain.
Warm on average, with sudden hard cold dropped into it. For anyone planning stock, that is the worst possible shape. You cannot skip heavy down, because the cold waves are coming. You also cannot count on selling it, because most of the season will be mild.
The cost side is going the wrong way too
Here is where it bites from both directions.
Down is expensive. The China Down Information Network had 90% white duck down at 557.93 yuan per kilo on October 9. Separate reporting on the first week of October put white duck at 559 yuan, up 17.61% year on year, and grey duck at 526 yuan, up 21.98%.
A normal short jacket carries roughly 100 to 150 grams of down. At those prices, that is 50 to 90 yuan of down in the garment before you have paid for fabric, zips, labour, shipping or the shop it sits in.
So when a down jacket retails at 199 yuan, something has to give, and it is worth knowing what before you try to compete with it.
Meanwhile the discounting started early. JD put spot goods on sale from 8pm on October 9 for Double 11, with no deposits and winter clothing in the full-period discount pool. That push normally waits for mid-to-late October or November.
Brands are cutting before the cold arrives rather than after. Chinese reporting also notes thick down jackets moving more slowly in physical stores than in previous years, while an 89-yuan lightweight white duck down jacket sold out of sizes online.
Not everybody is flinching
Bosideng is acting like a company that has seen this before.
It bought back shares on the Hong Kong exchange across six consecutive trading days from September 29 to October 7, spending HK$83.96 million. On October 5 it showed its autumn-winter 2026 collection at Paris Fashion Week, covering extreme cold, outdoor, business and its 泡芙 puff line.
Treat that as a position rather than a mood. People will still buy serious down. They will buy it for design and for the cold snaps, rather than for daily survival.
The factories committed early too. Pinghu (平湖) in Zhejiang, China's largest down jacket production base, ran an order fair in July that drew over 10,000 buyers and more than 600 million yuan in orders, up over 20%. One factory owner called it the busiest stretch in close to twenty years.
And warm winters have done real damage before. Fast Retailing blamed a warm December in mainland China for weak winter sales in fiscal 2025, a year in which its Greater China revenue fell 4.0%.
The part nobody is reading yet
One more line in the same forecast, and it has nothing to do with coats.
The National Climate Center expects the El Niño to weaken rapidly through spring and summer 2027 and end, while still driving notably higher temperatures, with summer heatwaves stronger and covering a wider area.
Your SS27 buy is being signed off in the next few weeks.
Everyone in the industry is currently staring at winter. The same announcement says next summer in China is likely to be hotter and the heat more widespread, which is useful to anyone buying linen, sun protection, cooling fabrics or anything that competes with air conditioning. That information is free and almost nobody will act on it until June.
Five things to do about it
1. Re-cut the winter buy by city, not by country.
Shift heavy down toward the Northeast, North and Northwest, where the cold waves land hardest and a mild average still means a real winter.
Push lighter layers, vests, liners and shells harder in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, where a warm December turns a thick parka into a markdown.
The national average is the number that will mislead you. Buy to the city.
2. Agree your cold-snap playbook now, while nobody is panicking.
The forecast says large swings, which means your best selling days this winter arrive with 48 hours of warning from a weather bulletin.
Decide today, with your distributor and your platform teams, exactly what happens when a cold wave is forecast: which stock moves to which city, which creative goes live on Douyin and Tmall, who approves it, and how fast. Write it down and give it a name.
The brands that win those weeks are the ones who do not need a meeting first.
3. Lead with grams, not with the logo.
Chinese shoppers check fill power and fill weight, and they know what down costs. At 557 yuan a kilo, the numbers are your argument.
Put down type, fill weight, fill power and a warmth range at the top of every product page and into the first thirty seconds of every livestream script. Most Western brands bury this on a spec tab below the fold, which leaves the customer with only the price to compare.
4. Decide your floor before Double 11 pressure peaks.
Discounting started early this year and it will get worse as the season stays mild.
Pick the two or three styles you will protect at full price, then use bundles, gifting and secondary styles for the promotional work. Deciding this in November, under pressure, with a warehouse full of parkas, produces a different answer than deciding it now.
5. Look at the summer forecast while you are in there.
The same announcement says summer 2027 will be hotter with wider heatwaves, and your SS27 range is being committed in the next few weeks.
If you have cooling fabrics, sun protection, linen or anything that sells in a heatwave, this is the cheapest planning signal you will get all year. Take it into the range meeting while the buy is still open.
